One Cordless Drill, Different Materials: How to Drill Wood, Metal and Tile 

A cordless drill may be one of the most versatile tools in a home workshop, but that does not mean every drilling job should be approached the same way.

 

A hole in a pine board, a hole in a steel bracket, and a hole through ceramic tile may all begin with pulling a trigger, but the material, drill bit, speed, pressure, and level of control are very different.

 

This is also why buying a more powerful drill does not automatically solve every home DIY problem.

Start with the Bit, Not the Drill

One of the most common beginner mistakes is treating drill bits as interchangeable.

They are not.

 

Different bit geometries are designed to cut different materials. Even when two bits look similar, the cutting edge, material and coating can make a significant difference.

Wood drill bits are designed to cut timber cleanly and efficiently. They are useful for furniture, shelving, cabinetry and pilot holes.

A handheld drill can appear vertical from the front while still leaning slightly from the side.

That becomes more noticeable when drilling deeper holes.

Drilling Metal: Heat and Control Matter More

Metal changes the problem.

 

Instead of cutting soft fibers, the bit is removing much harder material. Heat builds quickly, especially with larger bits or harder steels.

 

For metal drilling, good results depend on several factors working together:

  • an appropriate HSS or cobalt bit
  • suitable RPM
  • controlled pressure
  • lubrication when necessary
  • regular chip clearing

Smaller drill bits can generally run faster, while larger bits usually need lower speeds.

 

For example, when working with aluminum, practical starting ranges may be around 1500–2000 RPM for 2–3 mm bits, dropping toward 500–1200 RPM for 8–10 mm bits depending on the material and cutting conditions.

 

ST3's variable-speed Drilling mode makes that adjustment possible without changing tools.

And if the project continues from drilling into creating threads, ST3 can switch to its dedicated Tapping mode at 0–400 RPM.

 

That is particularly useful for brackets, aluminum extrusion, machine frames and other home workshop projects where the workflow may be:

Drill → Tap → Fasten

 

rather than simply drilling a hole and stopping there.

Tile and Glass Require a Completely Different Approach

Tile is where many first-time DIYers discover that “a drill bit is not just a drill bit.”

 

A standard wood or metal twist bit is usually the wrong choice for glazed ceramic, porcelain or glass.

 

These surfaces are hard but brittle.

 

The goal is not to attack them with more torque. Excessive pressure can damage the surface or crack the material.

 

A suitable diamond bit should be used, with controlled speed and steady contact. Cooling may also be required depending on the bit and material.
