Tape on the Drill Bit
Wrapping tape around the drill bit is the simplest method.
Measure from the drill bit tip, place the tape at the target depth, and stop when it approaches the material surface.
This method is quick, but tape can move, tear, or become hidden by chips. It is best suited to rough work where small depth differences are acceptable.
Drill Bit Depth Stop Collar
A drill bit depth stop collar clamps around the drill bit with a set screw.
When the collar reaches the workpiece, it limits further movement. It offers a more noticeable physical stop than tape and can work well for repeated holes.
However, the collar may slip if it is not tightened correctly. It can also trap chips or contact uneven surfaces inconsistently.
Countersink Drill Bit With Depth Stop
A countersink drill bit with depth stop helps produce pilot holes and screw recesses at a consistent depth.
It is useful for furniture and cabinetry where several screw heads need to sit at the same level. However, it is a specialized solution rather than a general depth-control system.
Drill Press Depth Stop
A drill press depth stop limits spindle or quill travel.
It provides good repeatability when drilling several similar parts. Its main limitation is portability: the workpiece must fit under the drill press.
Large panels, installed structures, machine frames, and on-site projects may require a handheld solution instead.
Digital Depth Feedback
A digital depth system measures tool movement and displays the drilling depth in real time.
It can be used with different drill bit sizes and target depths without installing a separate collar.
